Congratulations to Valerie and Alan Lum on the birth of their healthy baby boy. Garrett Lum was born December 18th weighing in at a healthy 8 lbs 9 oz. Mom and baby are doing well.

Congratulations to AMSC student Amanda Galante who was awarded the 2011-2012 Dr. Ruth Davis Fellowship in recognition of her outstanding academic achievements, and to AMSC student Changhui Tan who was awarded the 2011-2012 Mark E. Lachtman Graduate Student Award.
Congratulations to Kayo Ide, AOSC, CSCAMM, IPST, and ESSIC who is this year's winner of the CMNS Board of Visitors Junior Faculty Award, recognizing her accomplishments in research and education.

Prof. Dionisios Margetis, Department of Mathematics, IPST and CSCAMM, was the plenary speaker of the Fall meeting of Washington-Baltimore Section of the SIAM, held on WEDNESDAY, November 16, in the Clipper Room in Shriver Hall on the Homewood Campus of Johns Hopkins University.

Prof. Margetis presented a lecture entitled A Tale of Two Scales: From discrete schemes to Partial Differential Equations in epitaxial growth.

CSCAMM welcomes Professor Pierre-Emmanuel Jabin as a new CSCAMM faculty member (a joint appointment with the department of Mathematics). Prof. Jabin's research interests include transport equations, mathematical models for biology, kinetic equations, and many-particles systems.
Congratulations to Dr. Suleyman Ulusoy. He has accepted a position as Assistant Professor at Zirve University in Gaziantep, Turkey.
On May 11, Prof. Radu Balan (CSCAMM and Math) gave the Washington-Baltimore Section of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) expository lecture entitled Sparse Component Analysis: Use of Statistical Methods and Sparse Signal Representations in Convolutive Blind Source Separation Problems.
Congratulations to Prof. Radu Balan and Prof. Doron Levy on being promoted to Full Professors.
Congratulations to Dr. Knut Waagan. He has accepted a position as an Acting assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Washington, Seattle starting next academic year.
Prof. Dionisios Margetis (Math and CSCAMM) has been selected to receive the CMNS Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching for 2011.

The winners of the 2011 Monroe H. Martin Prize, Prof. Joel Tropp and Prof. Adam Oberman, gave talks on Finding structure with randomness: Probabilistic algorithms for constructing low-rank matrix decompositions and, respectively, on Discrete Geometric Game Interpretations of Nonlinear Elliptic Partial Differential Equations at the Monroe H. Martin Lectures on April 13th.
The CSCAMM seminar on March 30 featured a talk by Dr. Charles W. Clark and Dr. Bruce R. Miller of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) on "The NIST Digital Library of Mathematical Functions".
CSCAMM welcomes Alina Chertock - North Carolina State University, Maria Lukacova - Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Jose Carrillo - Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, Christian Klingenberg - University of Würzburg, and Jorge Balbas - California State University, Northridge who will be visiting CSCAMM during the month of March 2011.
CSCAMM welcomes Dr. Trygve Karper as a new Post-Doctoral Research Associate. He comes to us from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Eitan Tadmor (CSCAMM, Mathematics & IPST) gave a series of invited lectures at the North British Differential Equations Seminar in the cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, and Leeds.
Dio Margetis (CSCAMM/Mathematics) was elected as the secretary of the SIAM Activity Group in mathematical aspects of materials science for 2011-13.
