Advances towards open source 3-D multicellular cancer systems biology

Abstract:  

This talk will give an overview on the state-of-the-art in open source simulation software and open data for 3-D multicellular cancer systems biology. After discussing the ideal simulation framework for multicellular systems biology, we will explore leading open source packages that could be pieces in this idealized framework, including cell signaling, cell morphology, large-scale multicellular simulations, biotransport, angiogenesis, and tissue biomechanics. We will also explore efforts to standardize data at the subcellular and multicellular scales—key pieces necessary for integrating the emerging open source ecosystem into robust simulation frameworks for open, reproducible cancer science. We close with key challenges for our field.
