X-ray Signatures of Strong Gravity

Chris Reynolds

University of Maryland

Abstract:   Signatures of strong gravity are encoded in the temporal variability, spectrum, and polarization of the X-ray emissions from accreting black holes. I shall review the current status of these observations, including discussions of (1) the physical properties of the inner (relativistic) accretion flow, (2) constraints on black hole spin in both stellar and supermassive systems, (3) implications of these studies for the launching of relativistic jets. Finally, I shall discuss future prospects for these studies.
