Dynamics of Heterogeneous Voting Models

Abstract:
The voter model provides a paradigmatic description of consensus formation in a population of interacting agents. Each voter can be in one of two opinion states and continuously updates its opinion at a rate proportional to the fraction of neighbors of the opposite opinion. After a quick review of exact results for the voter model on regular lattices, I'll discuss several extensions: (i) the voter model on complex graphs, where consensus is generally achieved quickly and via an interesting route, (ii) heterogeneous voters, which leads to slow evolution, and (iii) partisan voters, in which the competition between voting dynamics and partisanship causes a competition between consensus and a "selfish" state in which individuals maximize their happiness at the expense of collectivism. |
