2011 Interdisciplinary Summer School: Granular Flows

Introduction – Granular Materials

Wolfgang Losert, University of Maryland

Outline:   Introduction to dense granular flows and to the basic properties of granular materials. The focus will be on phenomena with potential links to astrophysical observations.
  1. Basic flow profiles in shear flow, avalanche flow, and tumbler flow
  2. The importance of boundary conditions: From superstable heaps to inverted shear flow profiles
  3. The role of materials preparation: Friction, aging and memory in granular flows
