If not GR, what?

Ted Jacobson

University of Maryland

Abstract:   Well-behaved, natural alternatives to which General Relativity can be compared are few and far between. After a few remarks about the spectrum of possibilities, I will focus on GR augmented by a dynamical unit timelike vector field, a.k.a. "Einstein-aether theory". The current observational constraints on the theory from both weak and strong field phenomena will be summarized, and some important outstanding questions about the predictions of the theory will be highlighted.
